Product Description

Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from both HD and standard television programming and your favorite DVD movies the technologically advanced 46-inch Toshiba 46HM95 DLP projection TV. Vivid imagery and vibrant colors will pop off the screen, thanks to the integrated Texas Instruments' HD2+ chip, which enables a much higher contrast ratio along a more consistent picture than other DLP chips due to filled-in mirror "vias" in the center of each pixel. This set has a built-in analog/digital/digital cable tuners (NTSC/ATSC/QAM) that will receive free over-the-air HDTV signals (ATSC) and HDTV signals from a cable connection (QAM). It's also Digital Cable Ready (via the CableCard slot), so you can enjoy digital cable without an additional box or remote using an optional CableCard. It also comes TV Guide On Screen and Toshiba's innovative Channel Browser "back" button feature--similar to a PC browser back button--that allows easy access to recently viewed channels.

DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

The technology at the center of the 46HM95 is the new Toshiba Digital Light Engine named Talen X, which utilizes Texas Instruments' xHD4 chip, advanced optics, and Toshiba's DEEP Picture and Xtreme BLAC technologies to provide high resolution improved brightness and contrast. It also includes the new PixelPure AT Digital Video Processing, utilizing new Adaptive Technology to create further improved picture quality, the new Radiance 150 Hi-Bright Lamp for noticeably brighter images and a TheaterFine DFP Screen anti-glare coating that results in increased detail and noticeably deeper blacks.

The PixelPure AT digital video processor offers motion adaptive de-interlacing, adaptive MPEG processing, and adaptive contrast and color enhancement for a consistently high picture quality. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter (4 MB, 10-Bit) constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

The TheaterNet Control System simplifies the control of external components through both an IR jack and Firewire (IEEE1394) port, the latter of which can be used to transmit digital video and audio and allow for recording of HDTV. This set also includes a built-in OmniViewer memory card slot, which is compatible a wide variety of popular formats--Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stick, Compact Flash, and Smart Media--enabling you to view photo slideshows directly from your digital camera's memory card.

Perfect for viewing high-definition content and your favorite widescreen movies, this set offers a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. Other features include both picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-on-picture (POP) capabilities, tri-lingual on-screen menus (English, French, Spanish), channel labeling, channel return, channel browse, favorite channel, and V-Chip parental controls.

The 40-watt stereo audio system (two 20-watt speakers) delivers ample sound for sports and movies. It features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA) In: 2
  • S-Video In: 2
  • Component Video In (Y PB PR): 2
  • HDMI In: 1
  • RF In: 2
  • Firewire: 2
  • Digital Coaxial Audio Out: 1

Tech Talk
HDMI -- HDMI makes an uncompressed digital RGB connection from the source to the screen. By eliminating conversion to an analog signal, it delivers an unblemished image. The non-degraded signal reduces flicker and leads to a clearer picture. HDMI intelligently communicates the highest output resolution the source device. The HDMI input is fully backward compatible DVI sources but includes digital audio. HDMI uses HDCP copy protection.

TOSHIBA FIXES LAMP DEFECT

Review Date: December 29, 2005
Reviewer: Stretch,
I have talked Toshiba Direct about the numerous reports about lamps blowing after only 3 or 4 months and they admit they had been given defective lamps from A company that was manufacturing them for Toshiba DLP TVS. Toshbia told me that these "bad Lamps" were in DLP models manufactured in August and early Sept.05 Toshiba also said they were getting lamps from a new company and the problem had been fixed. I purchased the 46HM95 on black Friday at BB and i LOVE the TV, DVD and HD are bright and crisp, much brighter than plasma or LCD outstanding black levels . BTW Toshiba will replace the lamp IF it gos during the 1 year warranty.
Excellent picture quality

So far I am happy this set.

Pro's:
It has excellent, color, contrast, brightness. Blacks are BLACK! Over the air HD broadcasts look fantastic an indoor amplified antenna (treka). DVDs look excellent also. SD is better than I expected, but you cant be too close to the set. I was blown away by over the air HD quality --too bad there are not enough channels yet. I have been watching some of my kids DVDs (Incredibles, Nemo, Shrek) and I am amazed at the little details I had never noticed before! This is on an "older" Toshiba 480p DVD player, nonetheless.

Con's:
Bulb life may be an issue; I am concerned based what others are saying. There is fan noise. It may be unacceptable to some, but it is less than the noise coming from my DishNetwork DVR harddisk. TV Guide automatically comes on when you start the TV which is annoying to me. I wish the 46" came a black bezel.

Other comments:
I tried hooking up my DVD player expensive component cables ($70) and cheapo ones ($10) and I could not tell the difference.

Because of the bulb issues others were having, some concurred that it is worthwile to get a line conditioner to preserve bulb life. I purchased the Monster3500 and it seems like it has also improved picture quality. Previously, I thought these power conditioners were a scam. Live and learn.
Awesome TV

Like many others, I bought this DLP on Black Friday '05.
I did my research and found DLP's to have a more sufficient lifetime and video gaming capability. So, when I saw this I was directly attracted to it.
I took it home and gave it to my father as an X-Mas gift. I went ahead and got DishNetworks HD package Ultra.
I paired this set up my old PC speaker Logitech Z-5500 and WOW!
The whole setup blends in.
The TV's quality at 720p is amazing.
I also purchased a Toshiba Upconverter DVD player and the movies are amazingly & vivrantly displayed in this DLP.
Unlike many of the DLP's at that time, this one also comes 2 HMDI connectors.
Giving the image a more pure source for audio and video.
There has been rumours about the rainbow effect. Well I've experienced it only while loading PS2 for the first time.
The only thing confusing about the DLP is the control. It has a lot of buttons I've even yet to use.
My dad has an older Toshiba Projector that comes in a cabinet. It's about 52-56's and it's from the early 90's.
When he saw the color quality of the 46' he gladly did the downgrade in size and upgraded to the newer technology.
I did read about the bulb factor and I've had this unit for 6 months and i've yet to experience any issues. I have had to reset the set once. By unplugging it, and plugging it back in.
PS. all electronics over $1k I dd get a 3-4 yr warranty from Best Buy. Figured it's better to be safe than sorry.
All of our entertainment units in our house are Toshiba (dvds, vcrs and tvs). Not a regret yet.
flat love it

It was kind of hard to get the stand together, but once it was up & plugged in: easy to use, good sound, the TVguide feature is pretty cool, no problem the picture, just all around a good set.
Bulb had to be replaced after 20 months

I bought mine on Black Friday 2005 and after 12 months it is still going strong! So far it has been my best TV.

Update.. I had to replace the bulb in Fall 07 but otherwise it has been a great TV for the money.
